Doctor in Biostatistics from the University of Montpellier, Thomas Opitz is a researcher in the “Biostatistics and Spatial Processes” unit at INRAE Avignon.
His research focuses on the development of spatio-temporal statistical methods for climatic, environmental, ecological and epidemiological phenomena, in particular risks and extreme events against the backdrop of climate change. He is president of the “Environment and Statistics” group of the French Statistical Society and coordinates the RESSTE network bringing together a French-speaking research community working at the interface of risks, extreme events and spatiotemporal statistics. He is a member of the steering committee of INRAE's CLIMAE MetaProgram, guiding scientific programming around adaptation and mitigation issues in agriculture and forestry. In addition, he is associate editor for the international journal Extremes.
